Train-top rider electrocuted

BEKASI: The burned body of a man fell from the top of a train carriage at Bekasi station Wednesday afternoon.

The man, whose age has been estimated at around 27 years, was thought to have been electrocuted by the electric train’s cable, as the body had burns on the neck and shoulder, kompas.com reported.

Bekasi station security officer, Satria, said the deceased might have been an illegal passenger riding on the carriage roof. No ticket was found on the body.

Akhmad Sujadi, spokesperson for train operator PT Kereta Api, told the Post the station officials had asked all illegal riders to get off the roof.

“But the man might have climbed back on from the back of the carriage, and he was unfortunately electrocuted,” he said.

Passengers often climb the carriages to ride on top for free. In August, a male student was found dead in similar circumstances.

KA has tried to discourage the practice, employing such measures as spraying paint on passengers sitting on roofs earlier this year, but with limited deterrent effect. –JP
