Suspect says ex-minister main actor in fire engine case
Corruption suspect Oentarto Sindung Mawardi said Wednesday former home minister Hari Sabarno played major role in lobbying regional chiefs in the graft-inducing fire engine purchases across the country.
“The lobbies to regional chiefs were done together by Hari Sabarno and Hengky Samuel Daud,” he told journalists after a hearing session at the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) headquarters, completed at 13:55.
Oentarto, former director of regional autonomy at the Home Ministry, is allegedly responsible for writing a circular in 2003 stating that Hengky’s company PT Sarana Istana Raya was the sole provider of some fire engine in some regions.
He said he was questioned as a witness for Danny Setiawan, former West Java governor who has been named a suspects in the case.
“Hari and Hengky went together to meet with Danny in Bandung,” he said, not explaining how he knew the fact nor the purpose of the meeting.
The KPK has stepped up its investigation into the alleged corruption, following the conviction of some regional officials who had been involved in embezzlements in fire engine purchases.
Those jailed include former Medan mayor Abdillah, who was sentenced to five years in prison, and former Makassar mayor Baso Amiruddin Maula and former Riau governor Saleh Djasit, who were both sentenced to four years imprisonment. (dre)
