Police may drop case against Sukmawati
The police are running out of time in gathering facts to back the allegation of the General Elections Commission (KPU) on a forgery of high-school diploma by Sukmawati, chairwoman of the Marhaenism Indonesia National Party (PNI Marhaenisme).
Under the current legal system, the police only have two weeks time, which ends Tuesday, to compile case dossier for prosecution.
Badroddin Haiti, the National Police’s Director of Security and Trans National Affairs told reporters Tuesday that the police would stop the investigation if they failed to meet the deadline.
“We still have until the evening today, but if we don’t have enough evidence we would stop (the investigation),” Badroddin said.
Sukmawati’s candidacy as lawmaker was withdrawn after the allegation against the forgery was made. The party’s executives had defended the chairwoman, saying that Sukmawati, being one of the children of former Indonesian president Soekarno, had been repressed by Soeharto’s regime, including by being kicked out of school.
